When I found out that I would be moving to Utah, I knew that I wanted to find a job similar to what I was doing in Illinois. I have always enjoyed the private practice setting, having 2.5 years of experience in a pediatric therapy clinic in Illinois. So when I first began the job search, I started with a simple online query of pediatric therapy clinics in the Salt Lake City area. To my surprise, my options were limited. There were several clinic-type settings that were more medically based, but true stand-alone pediatric therapy clinics were rare. One of the only ones I found was FUNctionabilities. After browsing their website, I decided that it would be worth a phone call to get more information about the clinic. After speaking to August and Kaylyn and seeing the clinic in person, I was even more interested in working at FUNctionabilities as a speech-language pathologist.

I am drawn to the private clinic setting for pediatric therapy for many reasons, among them the one-on-one therapy sessions, flexibility, and variety of activities and materials. FUNctionabilities offers all of these things. One aspect that is particularly unique to FUNctionabilities is the therapy gym. August and Kaylyn, through personal and professional experience, along with research, have chosen many wonderful tools and activities for the therapy gym at FUNctionabilities. There are swings, a climbing wall, trampoline, ball pit, and many obstacles used for a variety of obstacle course set-ups. Your child will never be bored in this gym! Best of all, it can be used for a variety of purposes. Children receiving speech therapy services can participate in any of the gym activities too, often times using these activities as motivation for completing therapy tasks. Children receiving both OT and speech services can be working on both goals during the same activity.

FUNctionabilities has proven to be a great place for therapy in other aspects too, such as one-on-one therapy sessions and a variety of materials and games to make therapy both a place to learn and a place to have fun. I’m happy to have found such a great place to put my skills and knowledge as a speech-language pathologist to good use.
